Wrong Road, Wrong Direction

David Hamilton

By David Hamilton

This past week I was at the Freed-Hardeman University Lectures. I truly enjoyed myself as I listened to several outstanding speakers address the gospel of John. On Wednesday evening, I headed home from Henderson, Tennessee by way of getting on I-40 East. I drove several miles and decided to get something to eat about an hour outside of Nashville. I pulled off, got some Arby's and got right back on the interstate. Unfortunately, I was so busy drinking my milkshake and playing with the radio buttons that I didn’t realize I had gotten on I-40 West instead of I-40 East. What is even more unfortunate is the fact that I didn’t realize my mistake for about 20 minutes or so. It was then that I saw a sign that read; "Jackson- 44 Miles." I thought to myself, "David, you're not suppose to be heading toward Jackson!" Sadly, the next exit was several more miles down the road. All total, I traveled 27 miles on the wrong road heading in the wrong direction! I finally got turned around at the next exit. I had wasted nearly an hour of time just because I did not pay attention to what I was doing.
The fact of the matter is, as much as it was my intention to get home I would have never gotten there if I had continued traveling on the wrong road heading in the wrong direction. This is also true spiritually. Unless we are on the right road heading in the right direction, we will never reach our desired destination of heaven. The only road that will take us to heaven is that of Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said in John 14:6: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." Let’s remember that our belief in Christ coupled with our obedience to His commands is the only way to heaven. Are you on the right road?
