Our Citizenship

David Hamilton

By David Hamilton

I love being a citizen of the United States of America. I am thankful that I was born in and reside in a country whose freedoms run deep. I am able to pursue my dreams, goals, and aspirations in the way that I desire. I can express myself openly and move about freely. Breathing the air of freedom is indeed refreshing.
As much as I love these United States, however, this is not my permanent residence. I have another citizenship that is far greater than that of living in the United States and so does every faithful child of God! This far greater citizenship for the Christian is that of heaven. Paul writes in Philippians (3:20,21): “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.”
Sometimes, however, we forget about our far greater citizenship, a citizenship that will include a better body, a better home, and a better existence (no disease, no death, no tears, no fears, etc.). Let’s be sure as children of God that we conduct ourselves in such a way that we focus on one of our greatest priorities and that is realizing our citizenship is in heaven. In so doing, we will be able to appreciate life more fully because we understand that the best is still yet to come.
