Those Who Fail To Obey

David Hamilton

By David Hamilton

In the apostle Peter’s first letter, he writes to a group of Christians who have suffered severely for their beliefs (1:6; 2:12; 18-125; 3:13-17). In order to establish a sense of strength and stability in their hearts concerning their faith, he reminds his audience that even if they must suffer in the present, they will ultimately be blessed by God (4:13). Just after this, however, Peter also states that even after having endured these difficult circumstances the righteous will scarcely be saved (4:17,18). To complete the thought, he also asks, “If the righteous one is scarcely saved, where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?”

Wow! This is indeed a sobering question for all of us to consider! Have we in fact obeyed the gospel of Christ by believing on Christ, by confessing His Name, by repenting of our sins, and by being baptized for the remission of our sins? More than even these things, have we continued our walk with God in holiness, godliness, and sincerity? Have we ever suffered according to the will of God?

It is my concern that many people today have a false sense of security concerning the condition of their soul. They either believe that obedience to the gospel is not necessary for salvation or they believe that living a Christian life can be done so without sincerity. Neither of these views is a safe one to take concerning the well being of one’s soul. Let’s be sure that we adequately prepare our souls for the coming judgement.
