Holes in Our Lives

by Steven Kirby

On Friday morning, Nisha and I woke up to an unexpected surprise. We had a hole in our bathroom ceiling. A new shower caddy that I installed just last week caused it. The tension from the spring bar put so much pressure on the ceiling, it pushed the ceiling board to a point where it cracked and broke. It has left a hole that I will need to get repaired.

Many of us deal with holes in our lives on a daily basis. We might have a hole in our life caused by a job, a friend, a parent, or even by an emotion. In the job situation, you might be feeling a sense of despair wondering if you will have a job tomorrow. With a friend, you might be wondering why you are in a disagreement. With your family, you might be struggling with issues that are hard to deal with. And with an emotion, some of us might get into a hole of loneliness, loss, or uneasiness. When we get these holes in our lives it is sometimes a struggle to know what to do. We know we should turn to God, but some of us even struggle with that in our lives.

We know of one man in the Bible who also struggled with holes in his life, and that was Job. He struggled with the loss of his family, his wealth, and his physical health. But, he never did struggled with his relationship with his God. He always remained loyal and he never cursed God. Job struggled because his friends tried to get him to waiver, but he held true to love for his God. Because of this, the Lord blessed Job more during the latter days of his life than he did in the beginning.

All of us will have holes in our lives at some point and time. It is just our responsibility to learn how to deal with those holes. We can either let them continue to get bigger and deeper, or we can repair the hole. Many of us have spiritual holes. We need to understand that our Lord is there to repair them, and we need to turn to Him for those repairs.

“I know that my Redeemer lives…” - Job 19:25
