Who Is Our Steel Curtain?
The Pittsburgh Steelers will be playing in the Super Bowl tonight going for their sixth championship. I have been a fan of the team ever since I was a little boy. I can recall the days in the late 70’s when the term Steel Curtain first appeared. This was the nickname given to the Steelers defensive unit. It is getting tossed around again because the 2008 version has great players who know how to stop the opposing offense. They were ranked first in almost every defensive stats category under the leadership of defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau. The Steel Curtain defense has returned to prominence. They have always said that a good offense may help you get to the big game, but a great defense will win you championships. We will see tonight if that is true.
In our Christian walk, we need to be great for Jesus all of the time. We need to be pushing His word in our lives just like a good offense will push the ball down the field. We can use the word of God to spread His message to our family and friends who do not know how important that can be in their lives. We can be a good example to others in the way we live on a day-to-day basis. We can have a good offense for Jesus, and itwill help us win souls for His kingdom.
But, we first must have a Steel Curtain defense against Satan to achieve the offense we want for Jesus. Our best example of defense against Satan is our own Lord and Savior. Satan will attack us at our weakest moments and try to get us to turn against one another and God. With Jesus as our defense, we can push Satan back because we know that Jesus will appear before God as our advocate. ( Hebrews 9:24) Having paid for all our sins and purchased our complete forgiveness, He will speak on our behalf because He loved us so. ( Romans 8:34)
Do you have Jesus Christ as your Steel Curtain defense? He must be the offensive and defensive coordinator of our lives. We just need to let Him continue to call all of our plays for us. When we start trying to call the plays of life ourselves - we lose. When we try to do things we want to do - we lose. When we try to be the arrogant superstars - we lose. Let’s make sure we have good offense, but we must first make sure we have a great defense to win the game!
