Welcome to Our Website

A WORD FITLY SPOKEN
By Mark Jamieson

There are many ways available to us to encourage one another. Our attendance to classes and assemblies. A smile. A hug. A card. A visit.

In Proverbs 25:11, we read, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.” Our words are the greatest source of our encouragement. Our words can build up another who is discouraged, depressed, and overwhelmed.

We all need and desire encouragement. It has been said that it takes 10 compliments to undo 1 criticism. The converse is also true: one criticism can undo ten compliments. Paul writes, “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt…” (Colossians 4:6). Contextually, he is speaking about how we are to deal with those outside the kingdom (v. 5). If we are to so treat those who are not our brethren, how much more should we apply this to our brothers and sisters in Christ?

James says, speaking of the tongue, “With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.” (James 3:9- 10). We who have been saved from our sins by the grace of God should be looking for opportunities to encourage, and not going out of our way to tear down.

Likewise, Jesus teaches us that our words, whether good or bad, come from a heart that is the same: “Brood of viper? How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give an account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:34-37).

Who does God want you to encourage today? Let us resolve to bring forth good treasure from good hearts. Why not take them some golden apples in silver settings?

Something New and Challenging

By Mark K. Jamieson, Sr.

A new phase in our lives is upon us as our family faces the exciting challenge of moving to a new city and being joined to a new congregation of the Lord’s people. The Lord has richly blessed my family by honoring us with the opportunity to serve His church and the community in Franklin. It is our prayer that we may in turn be a blessing as we worship, serve, love, learn, weep, and rejoice together in the coming years.

Things that are new are exciting: that “new car smell,” a new dress, a new job, a new book, a new house, new furniture. Whatever it is, when you finally get that new____________, you can’t wait to try it out!

Our God, the Creator of heaven and earth, is the God of new beginnings. In the garden, God provided the sacrifice for Adam and Eve after their sin (Genesis 3:21). Since that time, He has made available every possibility of our new beginnings. Jesus came that we might have an abundant life (John 10:10). Through baptism, we walk in newness of life (Romans 6:3-4). Everyone who is in Christ is a new creature (II Corinthians 5:17). Abundant and new…that’s our God. He cannot change, nor should He, for He is perfect and holy. Yet, He not only calls for us to change, He also makes possible the way (John 14:6).

The Lord’s mercies and compassions do not fail, but rather are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). Our God is the God of new beginnings!

There is, however, a challenging side to things that are new. For example, when you get a new DVD player, you must learn how to use the controls, and worst of all, set the clock! Newness with God requires us to diligently move forward in order to make the most of the new. We must not rest on our present “newness,” but should challenge ourselves to reach loftier heights in our relationship with God and each other.

Over the next several months, I will be preaching sermons from a variety of texts that deal with different subjects. These lessons are intended to accomplish two primary things: 1) to give each of you a sense of your new preacher and what he believes, and 2) to challenge each of us to recommit ourselves to the work and worship of the Lord’s church. We all can make improvements in our public and private walk with God – this is the challenge that lies before us.

As a new chapter begins here at the church in Franklin, let us resolve to put God and His kingdom first (Matthew 6:33), and commit ourselves to the future of the church in this community.

The Building

Author Unknown
Ten Little Christians, standing in line,
One disliked the preacher, then there were nine.
Nine little Christians stayed up very late,
One slept too late on the Sabbath, then there were eight.
Eight little Christians on their way to Heaven,
One took the low road, then there were seven.
Seven little Christians chirping like some chicks,
One disliked the singing, then there were six.
Six little Christians seemed very much alive,
But one lost his interest then there were five.
Five little Christians pulling for heaven’s shore,
But one stopped to rest, then there were only four.
Four little Christians, each busy as a bee,
One got her feelings hurt, then there were three.
Three little Christians knew not what to do,
One joined the sporting crowd, then there were two.
Two little Christians, our rhyme is nearly done,
Differed with each other, then there was one.
One little Christian, can’t do much ‘tis true;
Brought his friend to Bible study, then there were two.
Two earnest Christians, each won one more,
That doubled the number, then there were four.
Four sincere Christians worked early and worked late,
Each won another, then there were eight.
Eight splendid Christians, if they doubled as before,
In just a few short weeks, we’d have 1,024.
In this little jingle, there is a lesson true,
You either belong to The Building, Or to the wrecking crew.

In Praise of Mothers

Salary.com released its 9th Annual Mom Salary Survery this past Tuesday. What it revealed was very astonishing to me. The survey determined that the time mothers spend performing the ten most popular “mom job functions” would equate to an annual cash compensation of $122,732 for a Stay-at-Home Mom and an additional $76,184 for a Working Mom, up 5% and 11% respectively from 2008. I know our mothers do a lot of things for us, but I never knew you could put that type of price tag on one of the most valuable jobs in the world. I think of moms in the light of the MasterCard commericals and see them as being PRICELESS.

We really can’t put a price tag on what our mothers mean to us. Our mothers are more valuable to us in their spiritual values. We should be thankful for their spiritual guidance in our lives.

1. Raise to Praise: Thank God for Her Godliness (Prov. 31:28-31)
A. Every child should praise her godly qualities.
B. Every husband is to be the example by praising his wife.

2. Verb The Superb: State Out How She Stands Out (Prov. 31:29)
A. Negative comparisons tear down her heart.
B. Positve praise builds up a heart.

3. Impart Her Heart: Characterize Her Godly Character
(Prov. 31:30; 1Peter 3:3-4; & 1 Timothy 2:9-10)
A. Don’t base her worth on temporal values.
B. Praise her for her Godly virtues.

4. Award Her Reward: Parade Her Godly Grade (Prov. 31:31)
A. Praise her for the fruits that she has produced.
B. Others recognize her worth - so should her family.

You see according to the survey a mother averages a 91.6 hour work week with an average of only 6.7 hours of sleep per night. But, we know that our mothers are there working for us 24/7, and we should be thankful. Our mothers are priceless! There is no better way to repay them other than to give them our PRAISE!

A Champion In Augusta

It is estimated that 42 million fans watched Kenny Perry on the final day of the Masters. At some point, every one of them was pulling for the Franklin native to become the oldest to ever win that storied tournament. None of them could have imagined the preparation that got him there. He and his son, Justin, had arrived ten days earlier - walking the hallowed fairways of Augusta, studying the yardage books, examining every break on the treacherous greens, imagining every scenario for a Sunday afternoon.

At some time on that final day, Kenny described himself as an “average golfer.” Hardly. By 6:00 p.m. that Sunday afternoon, he had outlasted and outplayed the number one and number two golfers in the world, not to mention 19 previous Masters champions.

Every professional golfer in the world would have loved to have been in the shoes of Kenny Perry on that last day - standing over a putt to win on the 72nd hole of a magical Master’s Sunday. When it didn’t go in and the other guy’s did, Kenny Perry stood at greenside applauding his competitor. His Bible had said to “honor one another above yourselves.” Kenny did, and a throng of fans around the final green were absolutely amazed.

And when the pressure packed playoff had ended, and someone else was fitted for the green jacket, Kenny Perry with unbelievable poise stepped up to a microphone to respond. Hurting deeply inside, he praised his competitor and expressed thanks for the incredible opportunity of those four days. His Bible had read, “Let your speech be always with grace...” Kenny’s was, and 42 million fans admired him even more.

In Franklin, Kentucky, we are extremely proud to call Kenny Perry our champion.

2009 MISSION TRIPS
Our church has been blessed over the years to help out and sponsor many individuals on mission trips. For the last several years, our members have traveled to El Salvador, Honduras, Peru, Brazil, and many locations in the United States. It is such a blessing to be able to spread God’s word into the world, and also get to visit some of the evangelist our missions ministry helps support on a financial basis. Please keep all of our individuals and their efforts in your prayers this week as they help spread God’s word.

El Salvador Mission Team: John Adams, Zach Ezell, Derek Shrull, Justin Vaughn, and Steven Kirby

Our group returned home early Sunday morning, March 22. They traveled to Tonacatepeque, El Salvador where they took part in an awesome mission trip. To date, there were a total of 21 baptisms, 1 restoration, and hundreds of people helped at the clinic during the week long evangelism/medical mission. A full detailed report will be given to the congregation at a future date.

Lipscomb University: Alex Patterson - Medical Mission Team to Honduras and Deidre Byrum - Mission Team leader to El Salvador

Alex has returned home and is now attending classes at Lipscomb again. Deidre will be El Salvador for another week and is scheduled to return home on Saturday, March 28.

WKU Hilltoppers For Christ: Jadie Hammock - Mission Trip to Texas

Jadie returned home from a successful trip. She has given a brief report and thank you in the announcement section of this website.

A very big “thank you” goes to each of you who have helped to support these mission efforts in so many different ways. You have generously donated boxes of crayons and medical and hygiene items and given of your talents to sew children’s dresses. With your assistance, we will be able to physically treat those in need and spread God’s word and love to people who would not otherwise had the opportunity to learn of Him.

He first served from 1980-1986 and he has currently served since 2006. Bob and his family have attended the services at Franklin since their return to the area in 2002 (They previously lived in Franklin and attended church from 1968-1986). Bob grew up in the Kokomo, Indiana, where he started preaching at small congregations when he was 16 years old. He graduated from Lipscomb University in 1962 with a major in business and Bible. He is married to his lovely wife, Donnieta, whom also graduated from Lipscomb. They have been happily married since 1961. They have three grown children: Jeff (who is a preacher in Northern Illinois and is married to Allison), Mike (who lives in Memphis and is married to Debbie), and Missy (who is a speech therapist in Birmingham and is married to Jason). They have three grandchildren who they love to spoil and take camping with them in their RV (The grandchildren call them OPA and OMA). Bob is a retired businessman since 2002 from MPD, Inc. where he was a Chief Financial Officer. Bob has served the church in various duties. He and Donnieta were houseparents at the Happy Haven Children's Home for the first three years of its existence in Cookeville, TN. He was a deacon (1973-1986 and 2003-2006) with the education and youth programs, has taught several adult and teen Bible classes, and currently serves as an overseeing elder of the building and youth ministry programs. He is also currently serving as a Co-Director of Simpson County Youth Camp (the summer camp for the Franklin Youth Group) at Taylor Christian Camp. When asked what his goals would be for our church family, he replied..."to grow more spiritually minded, become more evangelistic, and to develop more Christian family love. His main desire for the congregation is to learn to focus worship upon God and Christ, to develop more Bible knowledge, and to serve the spiritual needs of all ages."
